About this breed
Being a brown egg commercial layer breed, Black Sex Link Chickens are a cross between a Rhode Island Red male and Barred Plymouth Rock Females. These little guys were developed and bred with commercial egg-laying in mind and can be sexed at hatch. Also known as Black Beauties, Black Stars or Black Rock chickens, Black Sex Links are great for flock owners looking to maintain a certain rooster to hen ratio. The hens are large enough to be used for their meat once they are spent.
Black Sex Links are hardy and productive egg layers who also possess a substantial enough size to be a dual-purpose chicken. Males are black and white barred with females being solid black. Being that these are not purebred chickens, they aren't typically allowed to participate in exhibitions.
