About this breed

The Silver Laced Wyandotte is the original and most popular variety of the ubiquitous Wyandotte Chicken breed. Originating in New York, they were admitted to the Standard all the way back in 1883. Though no one knows the exact way they came about, they were most likely a mix between Dark Brahmas and Spangled Hamburgs. Wyandottes are hardy, active, medium-sized birds who provide enough size to be considered for their meat but are mainly used for egg production.

The Silver Laced Wyandotte is known for its beautiful silver laced plumage. Males and females do have varying plumage. The males have silvery white heads with each feather-bearing a black stripe. They also have a silvery white back with a black tail.

Females have a silvery gray head with a black tail. They produce around 200 large brown eggs a year in their first few years of laying. They re very easy to care for and a great buy for the first time or novice owners. They adapt well to confinement and flourish in free range situations as well.

Being docile, hens will brood infrequently and make excellent mothers.
